Day 18 - Fort Bragg, CA 112 km

Their route the day before had taken them inland away from the coast but before the day was over they would be back on the coast.  The norm for the last few days has been to start the day in cold fog and today was no exception.  The cold temperature is not quite as much of an issue when riding up big hills like the 1700 ft climb they had first thing in the morning but then they freeze flying down the other side of the hill.  But then as they reached the coast the fog lifted and the sun illuminated the coastal panorama.  They left Hwy 101 and travelled along Hwy 1, the Coast Line Rd. which although fairly narrow has light traffic.  The vegetation has changed dramatically from the redwood forests to open grassy vegetation.  Their views now are coastal, complete with large colonies of big seals flopped lazily in the rocks.  It's nice to be back on the coast.
They stopped in West Port for lunch mainly because it was the 1st place they came to with any amenities.  They are meeting more cyclists now, traveling in both directions.  Just today they have passed or been passed by 6-8 groups of fellow cyclists.  They are also finding the roads quieter now after the Labour Day weekend.  Two & half days to San Fransisco.
